BUMPS Overhead Shot

Track Details

BUMPS is a very short outdoor track, but challenging nontheless - boiling down to 2 straights with 3-corner-complexes at either end. The circuit is a council-run Youth Club by day, meaning the prices here are considerably lower than elsewhere. Unfortunately though, sometimes the track can fall short of the demands of a full race event.
The circuit is usually run by Mick, a man with many years experience as a race mechanic in Karts. He is a top bloke who knows how racing works, so be sure to listen when he speaks - his advice is often invaluable.
A timing system was bought at the start of the 08/09 academic year, and a good timing system at that. This now means that all times posted round the track can be recorded, so you know exactly how quickly you are going. If you are driving on the track for the first time, and the track is bone dry, you should be looking to get under 28 seconds, but just over 28 seconds isn't shabby. A time under 27 seconds is achievable by those who have been on the track on several occasions, whilst the top drivers within the society will aim to get under 26 seconds. 15 drivers have achieved this so far.

Track Guide

Despite the short length of the track, there is still a knack to driving at BUMPS.
Turn 1 is a left-hander with a fast approach, but turn 2 is a long right-hand bend. Drivers can afford to brake later than normal and carry less speed through the turn as the exit speed is less important. So in turn 1 drivers want to apex the turn as late as possible. This will allow them to come back across the track to gain a favourable line for turn 2.
This is a tricky, long right-hander with a crest. This turn should be taken flat-out with a wider line OR a slight dab of the brakes with a tighter line. Personally I favour the tight line. The kart will lose grip over the crest so be ready for a slide - however try not to let it get out of hand or you have already ruined your lap! Try not to drift too wide on the exit as there is a slight kink in between turns 2 + 3. Exit from turn 2 dictates your speed through the rest of the lap.
Turn 3 is another right hander requiring extreme precision. Most accidents occur here. A good line is of great importance - turn in too early and you will likely lose a lot of speed when you have to brake. Turn in too late and you will simply run out of road and smash into the tyre wall! This is a high-speed corner, and your exit is essential. There is plenty of kerb to use on the exit, and you will need it!

Now is good chance to take a look around to check for other competitors as the straight gives you a chance to get your breath back! A blast down the back straight leads into turn 4 - yet another fast right-hander. Use the kerb on the left at the end of the straight as a marker before turning in. There is lots of room here which is good as this is the fastest point on the whole track! A good run through here is the only way to set up a move at the hairpin turn 5.
Turn 5 is the slowest corner on the track - a 180degree right-hand corner, requiring heavy braking. It is also the best overtaking point on the track, and is also the scene of the pit entrance. You need to get back on the power early to get a good run all the way back to turn 1 on the next lap! This corner requires another late apex as the next turn is a left.
Turn 6 is a simple left-hander which should be flat-out and then you are back on to the start/finish straight!

Issues and Rules

Unlike the other circuits we will use, BUMPS has the following rules:

1. FULL-COURSE CAUTION - In the event of a yellow flag being waved ALL competitors on any part of the circuit must slow down and refrain from overtaking. Due to the tight confines of the circuit, the marshals will have to cross the track to attend any accident so be aware that something is amiss. NO OVERTAKING ON ANY PART OF THE CIRCUIT DURING YELLOW FLAGS.

2. THE ONE-MOVE RULE - As in Formula 1,
"only one deviation from a driver's driven line is permitted when attempting to retain a position from another driver".
I believe Mick introduced this as the slower drivers are almost always in a position to be lapped here due to the nature of the circuit. The rule is not overly enforced, but is there to remind drivers that over-aggressive defense can be dangerous - although the driver attempting to pass can make as many moves as they want.

3. ROLLING STARTS - The rolling start is another safety consideration. The first corner at BUMPS is a tricky left-hander and, due to the questionable positioning of a tyre barrier, very much single file! Basically a rolling start means that drivers will stay in formation and in grid order whilst doing a slow 'pace lap'. The speed of the 'pace lap' is supposed to be around half-race speed, but is dictated by the driver on pole position. Once all of the drivers are around the final corner, the start line official will either:-
1. wave the green flag to signify that racing has commenced, or
2. send the drivers around to do another pace lap as they did not feel the formation of the grid was correct.
In rolling start conditions, NO DRIVER MAY OVERTAKE UNTIL THEY HAVE CROSSED THE START/FINISH LINE.

4. NECK-BRACES - BUMPS is the only circuit we use which require the use of Neck Braces. These are provided by the circuit, but drivers will have to share. Make sure you are wearing a Neck Brace, as failure to do so will result in a BLACK FLAG meaning track positions will be lost as a Neck Brace is sourced for you to use! (as I found out racing there last year)

5. INDUCTIONS - If this is your first time at the track, no matter what level of karting you are at, you will be required to undertake an induction before you go out on the track. This basically goes through the basic rules of karting, and makes sure you know the rules. You will only need to do this once, if you return to the track for a second time, you will be able to go straight onto the track
