Dear Students,
Whether you're a new or returning member to this society, the rest of the exec and I would like to welcome you to the 2009/10 academic year with Hull University Go-Karting Society! We're planning a huge amount of stuff for you guys in the months to come involving karting, socials and motor sport and are really looking forward to sharing all of the unannounced bits and pieces with you in the near future. In the meantime, have a look through the items below:
1) Races - We have currently announced three go-karting events, all fully booked and exclusive to those who have never raced with HUGS before. Those who have signed up to these events will get a short email detailing the what's, where's and when's of these events later today. For those who didn't get a chance to sign-up, do not fret! We are very anxious to announce more races for one and all very soon, keep checking our website for more news.
2) Socials - Our Social Secretary, Tom Smith, has been very busy over the Summer working out exactly how to get us all very drunk, very quickly and in a very fun way. This sounds like an easy job, but its really not and takes a lot of hard work, not to mention a huge strain on his liver. You can repay his kindness, if you like, by coming along to a couple of socials - Tom has already sent an e-mail out about this so I won't go on, but I believe the first social is this Wednesday, starting at about 9.30 in The Gardeners Arms. From there, we intend to move out to Asylum from 10 until closing time (usually between 2 or 3 in the morning) and then onward for takeaway food and bed.
3) Getting to Know Us Better - If you'd like to know more about our race tracks, the Executive Committee, event announcements and/or anything else about the society, check out our website at hugs.drnaylor.co.uk.
3) Membership Fee - We had a phenomenal amount of interest in HUGS at the Societies Fayre, with a lot of people signing up to our mailing list and showing a genuine interest in one aspect of HUGS or another. However, please be aware that to participate in any society race or buy society merchandise (e.g. hoodies, t-shirts) we will need to accept the £3 membership fee the union asks we charge as a minimum from you, our members. At the next HUGS event you attend, please make sure to bring your membership fee with you so we can accept you as a fully fledged member!
4) Mailing List Subscription - To anyone who does not wish to receive these emails anymore, either because they have left Hull or are not interested in this society this year, please reply to this email with the word 'UNSUBSCRIBE'. As soon as you apply to leave the mailing list, we will try our very best not to bother you ever again, or at least until societies fayre next year.
OK! I'm feeling good about this year, its going to be better than ever before, as I'm sure you'll all see when we meet you in the near future. For now, I hope you finish off freshers week in style and I'll get in touch with you soon.
Best Regards,

2) Socials - Hey guys, Tom Smith social sec here, just letting you know that like pretty much every AU team and society out there we do have socials. Attendance is not compulsary, and if you do attend you're not bound to us if some of your other friends show up, although we'd obviously prefer to hang out with us. After races we'll be going to the Asylum, and obviously we'd love you all to come with, regardless of whether you attended that race or not.
More important, the start of week 3 (October 12th), we will be having a drinking game social at Piper (Newland Avenue) where most of the drinks are £1, pints are £1.25, so it's a cheap night and a great way to get to know everyone. Even if you aren't down for the first race, please come down for games like Arrogance and Ring of Fire (HUGS rules), where nobody wins.
Aim to arrive for just before 8pm to take advantage of the free entry and non-existent queue. Cheap drinks start at 8, so getting there earlier is a waste. That being said, given I don't know bus times you are better off arriving with time to spare. I personally will be there from 7pm to keep any early birds company.
That's about it for me
