Dear All,
On behalf of the society, can I take the opportunity to welcome you back from Winter break; I hope you all had a good time while we were away and are looking forward to getting back to University life as usual. As much as Winter is a cold, dark season, we're going to try our hand at giving it little bits of light with races and events over the next seven weeks til Easter. How so? Well, here's a list to kick you off...
1) Social - Monday February 1st - Piper Club, Newland Ave - 7pm til doors shut - Social Secretary Tom Smith is in the process of organising a night for newcomers and familiar faces alike. This is a great chance to catch up with old friends, start the year with some new ones and ultimately play a whole lot of ring of fire. Quick tip, entry before 8pm is free so try and meet us there before doors close. If you haven't browsed the Facebook event group yet and checked your name next to 'attending' or 'not so much thanks', please do at the following link: click here
2) Race and Social - Wednesday February 3rd - Raceway Karting, Pontefract - 3pm til 8pm - £25 - On with the races. We get started with a trip to the karting track at Pontefract, where Sam Firth, Marcus Stuttard and Tom Smith have all taken victories this year. We'll meet in the Concourse Lounge at 3pm ready to leave as soon as everyone has amassed. When we get there, two half-an-hour races will be run in free-for-all format with a maximum of 9 karts taking the track in each race. This means we are limited to a maximum capacity of 18 drivers total for this event. With 5 places already taken by the exec, this means that only the first 13 to confirm they're attending this race will get a spot. After the race, we'll be headed to Asylum for a classic 'Tower' social and general good night out, which we encourage as many people to come as they like. To confirm yourself for this race, please tick the 'attending' box at the following Facebook event page, located by clicking this link: click here
Your attendance will be confirmed by a reply email. If you can volunteer your services as a driver for members to get to and from the circuit, please get in touch with one of the exec members, either in person, by phone, Facebook or email. We're always in need, so anything you can do is appreciated.
3) Race and Social - Wednesday February 10th - East Hull Wheels, Hull - 4pm til 8pm - £27 - Our next race takes place just 4 miles away from University land, in East Hull. We travelled there once in the past semester, where Will Russell, Rob Stephenson and James Hancox took victory in a team endurance format. We're once again using a team endurance format, with teams of 3 and 75 minutes of race time between everyone in a team. Information on how to register for this race will come soon.
4) Social - Wednesday February 17th - Multiple Pubs, Hull - Time TBC til 3am - We're throwing a large social this week, allowing all a small break. Although specifics are still in the pipeline, I can tell you Pub Golf will be involved.
and finally...
5) Race - Wednesday February 24th - Inter-University Championship Race 2 - PPiK, Leeds - 3pm til 9pm - For the society, this is the important one. We recently placed 2nd out of 3 teams in the first round of this year's competition with York and Durham's Karting organisations and we want to go one better in the next race taking the win at Leeds and eventually winning the championship at round 3. We're well placed to take a Leeds victory (our laptimes compare pretty well against theirs) however we're still going to need all the help to take the full win home. This race is invite only, we'll get in touch with you if we need you for one of our teams.
That's everything I have at the moment, I'll send out more emails throughout the semester with everything going on with the society as I know about it.
Peas. out,
Sam Jackson

Hi Guys and Girls, More structured e-mail than usual, flit between what interests you and what doesn't. Christmas Meal 2009 The HUGS Christmas meal this year is pencilled in as the Friday of Week 11, which conveniently is Friday the 11th, at Ray's Place on Princes Avenue. This is our traditonal home for the Christmas meal. It's an Indian restraunt, but the menu does cater for those who aren't massive Indian fans. It doesn't have a liquor licence, so you bring your own booze. Which can be anything you want, as little or much as you like. And more importantly, they don't mind us getting loud and rowdy. Prices vary depending on what you order. What I need to know is, who's coming, so I can confirm the booking. The time may vary, depending on the table availability given our unconfirmed numbers. So I need you ALL TO REPLY ASAP, so we can get this booked. Thank You. AU Tour You have until Friday 4th December to sign up to the best week of the Year. Even if you're not active on our socials or our races yet, you have four months to join in, and trust me on this, Tour is worth every penny. Plus, if we don't know you that well even once you've signed up, it'll take the bus ride for you to be integrated and drunk.
No Race On Wednesday, Chill out Social and Accessory Social Instead
Given the recent high cost races, and £14 outlay for Shirts that 24 of you ordered (2nd batch will be available after the X-mas break for those of you who missed out), we have decided that there will be no race this week, given that the cheapest available track would set each of you back £25 of the Her Majesty's finest pounds, instead we'll be hitting the Gardeners Arms on Cottingham Road to get slowly drunk on a cold winter's afternoon, before Heading off to get showered and ready for Asylum. Our theme for Asylum this week is fairly simple. Acquire for yourselves, any and as many novel accessories (that are cheap and you don't mind ruining/losing) you can lay your hands on, so we can show up to Asylum and look like the drunk pillocks we actually are. As usual, chaos will be led by your beloved Social Sec, and punishment shots will be handed out to Mr Sam Jackson and Mr Josh Overhill, for foolishly believing that Tom had left Asylum early last time out (I know, disgusting isn't it).
On A Final Note: To those of you who went to the Inter-Uni Race last week, kudos to a superb performance, to go to Teeside, noted as 'Fortress York' as far as Inter-Uni goes, to come away with second place, and be within 3 seconds and 4 seconds (A Team and B Team respectively) of the 2 point swing it we needed for a Tie, is sensational. Given York's stellar reputation around Teeside, their noted experience advantage going into the race, having had their entire team attending at least one race there this semester, take great comfort in the level of panic you guys had instilled in them before the race. "We said we had a wet weather team... We prayed for wet weather... It poured..." A Direct quote from the York website.

As the end of the year approaches, HUGS closes down for a short period of hibernation. We will be back in the second semester with a full race calendar and many more socials planned.
Can HUGS beat YUKC and DUMMS in the next two rounds of the Inter-University Championship? Can Josh clamber to the top of the BUMPS time sheets once more? Will Paul be able to go one night in Asylum without taking an item of clothing off? 'Yes', 'if he's lucky' and 'almost no chance' are the answers I fear, however if you want to know for certain make sure to take a good long pit stop over the holidays and get ready to start your engines, as HUGS returns!

Josh Overhill
On Wednesday 25th November 2009, Hull took 6 teams to Teesside Autodrome, the spiritual home of inter-university racing for those in Yorkshire and the North East, for this years' edition of the competition between Hull, York and Durham. Despite some very strong performances from the Hull drivers, they were ultimately edged out by York by just 2 points, but everyone can take heart from the way they drove in absolutely horrible conditions, and in truth it could have gone either way; York could not have had any complaints had Hull won.
In the race itself, Hull’s A team of Imran Khan, Mark Foley and Josh Overhill were seemingly the quickest team on track, but their progress was hampered in unfortunate circumstances as one of their karts’ engines cut out at both driver changes, resulting in an out lap having to be done on one engine before losing a lot of time by returning to the pits on both occasions. Josh’s late charge was not enough, as they had to settle for second behind York’s A team (who had no such trouble), by an agonising 3.5 seconds. Such was the dominance, the 3rd place team was over 2 laps behind.
Hull would see 4 of their teams in the top 8, with the B team of Sam Jackson, Tom Smith and Liam Lau in 5th, just 4 seconds behind Durham A. The D team of Kevin Gambles, Pete Szedlak and Marcus Stuttard finished 7th, a brilliant effort considering all 3 had never driven at the track before and all were new to HUGS this year. The C team finished 8th, having suffered similar problems to the A team (but on a bigger scale), their drivers being Will Russell, Mike Miller and Phil Skop, with Phil setting the 3rd fastest lap of the race, after Josh and 1 from York’s alumni team.
With each universities’s top 4 teams counting towards the overall points, York narrowly edged out Hull with 32 points to 30, whilst Durham lagged far behind on a distant 16. York fielded an Old Boys team under the agreement they would be ineligible for points, but rather ironically, they could only manage 12th after numerous kart problems, and were behind York’s top 4 teams.
