A very warm welcome to all members of Hull University Go-Karting Society to the 2008/2009 season!!! I will be sending you fairly regular emails on events etc that are going on...and here is the 1st one:
1 - We already have some events booked and have people signed-up and ready to race...those of you who have paid your 2.50 membership fee, THANK YOU! You are fully accredited members and we all think you're fantastic people, who we reckon can go far! Those of you who have not paid yet are still welcome in the society...but in order to actually attend a society event we will need to take 2.50 from you for insurance purposes.
2 - Anyone who is receiving this email and has either a) left University, b) has no interest whatsoever in Go-Karting or the Go-Karting Society, could you please respond to this email letting me know so I can remove you as a contact. If you have left Uni but are still interested in Old Boys races then let me know, so we can organise one later in the year.
3 - FIRST SOCIAL OF THE YEAR!!! We have booked the 3G football pitch at Uni from 4 pm till 6 pm...this year sees the return of HUGS FC (Hull University Go-Karting Society Football Club), and we are looking for players with enthusiasm and who enjoy having a laugh on the pitch. No skill necessary, but if you do have any then that's a bonus! Please reply to this email if you are intending on coming down for it so we have an idea of numbers. Chances are we shall end up in a pub afterwards
4 - Who's in charge here...well here are your intrepid leaders, responsible for running the society:
President - Jon Beagles.
A God among men...a Karter with unrivalled skill and ability...ok, maybe not, but I am pretty handy on track! I've been a member of HUGS since my 1st year (2005/06), and have yet to miss a race with the society that I was in the same country as (I spent last year in Germany). My nickname in the society is 'Sato' due to my early years, where I had a lot of pace but caused an inordinate amount of crashes...hence being likened to the Japanese Whirlwind that is Takuma Sato (the F1 driver). However, like Sato, I have improved and am no longer a danger to others on the track...don't expect me to go easy on you just cos of that though! I was Vice President of the Society in 06/07 and this year I'm also President of the Karaoke Society...cos I figured the final year of my degree was just not enough work on it's own!!!
Vice President - Nick Drewett
Some say he dressed up as the Stig at Freshers Fair, some say he can eat an entire Go-Kart as long as it's covered in Barbeque Sauce and that he hibernates with a family of grizzly bears every winter...all we know is, he's called Chewy! Nick 'Chewitt' Drewett joined the society in 2006 and quickly proved himself a consistent and reliable racer...last year though he really came into his own and started setting the pace at the front, often challenging perennial HUGS powerhouses Imran Khan and Pip Hammond...expect more of the same this year, and also see him for info on T-shirts later in the year and various other schemes we appoint him to do.
Social Secretary - Paul Hutton
Joining the Society in 2006, Paul quickly got a reputation for being...well...somewhat of a moving chicane, the winner of the 06/07 'Captain Slow' award went into the 07/08 season with something to prove, and by jove did he do that! Shaking off his status as a back marker he was often in the midfield and even qualified for an 'A' final by the end of the year...easily identifiable by his tousled mop of blonde hair, Paul is an ardent Liverpool fan (as am I) and can often be found in the Gardeners watching the match on a Saturday...he is also captain of HUGS FC, so will be keeping us all in order on the pitch! He is the Social Secretary, so expect details about Socials to come from him usually...including such activities as Poker, Quizzes, Football, Night's Out and much much more!!!
Treasurer - Keith Herbert
Saving the best till last of course, the President of 06/07 resembles a hairier version of James May and has always been a solid and dependable racer with tons of speed to boot. His laid back manner belies how fast he goes...and if you upset him on track you can look forward to having his fist shaken firmly in your direction! Keith is our Treasurer this year, and for the first time in HUGS history the society treasuer is actually handling money!!! He's a trustworthy bod, who you'll find yourself paying money to over the year...and we assume he'll put that into the society's account.
5 - If you have any questions about the society and the events we hold please do not hesitate to email me or any of the other exec members here, or if you took a contact card at Freshers Fair you can reach us through any of the numbers/addresses there! A full Calendar of Semseter 1 events will follow this email soon...but for now, let me end by saying...
"BUGGETY BUGGETY BUGGETY BOYS, LET'S GO RACING!!!"
Your President
Jon Beagles
