Club Endurance, BUMPS, Wednesday 20th May 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 3
The build-up to the last HUGS-only event of the year had not been the greatest. Doubts whether the race would actually be at BUMPS led to a massive debate whether the replacement should be Grimsby or Pontefract (lets face it, Grimsby won hands down). The race wasn’t confirmed to be at BUMPS until 48 hours before the event was set to take place, and as such, along with the fact that the exam period was in progress, there weren’t as many people racing as there had been. The drama didn’t finish, late arrivals, no-one being available to induct the 3 newcomers, as well as Paul somehow managing to forget to pick people up from the University meant that the already shortened tracktime had been shortened further. After much discussion over the format, an endurance was decided upon.

TEAMS
Kart 1 - Nick Drewett (c), Tom Smith, Colin
Kart 2 – Paul Hutton, Sam Foxall, Jon Beagles (c)
Kart 3 then 6 – Adam Hibberd, Keith Herbert (c), Kumes
Kart 5 – Jackie, Mark Foley (c), Liam Lau
Kart 8 – Jimbo Perkins, Amy Charles, Sam Jackson (c)
Kart 9 (Team Cambridgeshire) – Josh Overhill (c), Jane Cummings, Alex Tweed

The previously mentioned lack of time meant that only a 1 hour endurance was possible, with a random grid. A short sharp shower just before the race soaked the track, and led to many people trying to decide if it was going to rain again before the end of the race. The general upshot appeared to be that it wasn’t going to. And so, the karts took to the damp track. Nick and wet-weather specialist Josh were the only 2 captains to take the start, the duo betting with each other before the race that everytime one laps the other, the lapped driver buys him a pint. Josh was looking forward to some free cider. But first he had to negotiate his way to the front from the back, while Nick was handed pole position from the random grid.
The flag fell, and the race began tentatively as everyone was still trying to work out how wet the track actually was. Josh wasn’t hanging around, and was up to third from last by turn 3, whilst Nick’s poor start, coupled with the fact that he nearly ended up in the tyres at Turn 3, saw down to second, with Paul in the lead. But the expected situation soon arose, with Paul dropping down to third behind Nick and Josh. Josh then found himself with an opportunity to pass Nick and did so going into Turn 1, a rare overtaking place for a battle between two near-enough equal drivers. With the track drying, Josh wasn’t able to get away from Nick as quickly as he would have liked, and although he was able to open a bit of a gap, Nick soon closed it back up as they both had to negotiate lapping the others. In fact they had both lapped everyone else including Paul when Nick finally got a chance to pass Josh going into Turn 5, and he did so, firmly but fairly. The track had completely dried by this point. Josh was able to keep up with Nick for the remainder of the stint, but was never close enough to make an attempt to overtake. It looked like neither would be buying the other a drink later.
The first round of driver changes came, and Keith and Mark took to the track, whilst Nick handed over to Tom for Kart 1, but Josh stayed out 2 laps longer, and an efficient change, which saw Jane take over for Kart 9, saw the all-Cambridgeshire team comfortably back in the lead. But no sooner had the driver changes taken place, the heavens re-opened, and it was raining much heavier than it had done the first time. Before too long the track was completely soaked, but, credit to the drivers on the track, spins and crashes were relatively few. Tom had put Kart 1 back into the lead ahead of Jane in Kart 9, but she was doing a great job in keeping the kart on the island and facing the right way, and not in the tyre wall. The penalty for ending up in the tyre wall was far greater than usual, as it would seemingly take the marshals a long time to realise someone needed pushing out the tyres, and then actually doing so. Amy found this out, spending a long time in the wall at Turn 2. Keith was also in the wars, but for a different reason, his kart had broken down, and a replacement was needed, but by the time he was back out, his team were very far behind. Tom still held the lead, as the top 4 karts were separated by less than 2 laps as every teams third and final drivers took to the track.
Sam Foxall had done a solid job for Kart 2, and although Jon was 4th when he went out, he was perhaps the favourite to go on to win the race, but he faced stiff competition from Alex in Kart 9 and Sam Jackson in Kart 8, as they all tried to catch newcomer Colin in Kart 1, who was in the lead. Jon’s progress was being hindered by a couple of spins, as well as a collision with Sam going into Turn 1. Nonetheless, Colin struggled as the track was still extremely wet, and he soon slipped behind all three chasing karts and was down into 4th place, whilst Jon had taken the lead. It meant that it was now all eyes on the battle for second between Alex and Sam, with the two on the same lap, and covered by only a few seconds. However, with just a few minutes to go, kart 9 decided it had had enough, and grinded to a halt at Turn 2. This handed Sam second place. Although there was still time left, it was deemed pointless to give Alex a new kart, but incredibly everyone else was so far behind, when the chequered flag fell they were still in third. But it was Kart 2, with drivers Paul Hutton, Sam Foxall and Jon Beagles, who were the winners.

RESULT
1. Kart 2 – 105 laps
2. Kart 8 – 104 laps
3. Kart 9 – 97 laps
4. Kart 5 – 95 laps
5. Kart 1 – 94 laps
6. Kart 3 then 6 – UNKNOWN

When kart 3 was replaced with kart 6, it’s transponder number was not entered, hence it was not known how many laps exactly they did.
